The Mickey Mouse Revue

Q: In 1973 my wife and I visited the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World on our honeymoon. We saw and loved an attraction called the Mickey Mouse Revue. If I remember correctly it was similar to the Country Bear Jamboree. On subsequent visits we could no longer find it. Could you tell us what happened to it?

A [Dave Smith]: The Mickey Mouse Revue, an Audio-Animatronics® attraction featuring Disney characters performing some of the most memorable Disney songs, was created for Walt Disney World, opening in 1971. In 1980 the attraction was removed and sent to Tokyo Disneyland, where it played from 1983 to 2009. Mickey's PhilharMagic is now in the former location of the Mickey Mouse Revue in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.

There´s 2 videos above about Mickey Mouse Revue. The first one is the original version in the Magic Kingdom and the second one is the Tokyo Disneyland version.

The original Mickey and Minnie Costumes

Q: I'm watching the Disneyland: Secrets, Magic, and Stories DVD and just watched the footage with the original Mickey and Minnie costumes (the ones that looked a lot like Halloween costumes as the narrator noted). I wanted to know if Disney still has these costumes saved or are they lost to history?

Donald's One Stop Service

Q: I have an 8mm cartoon movie made by Mickey Mouse Cine Art Films. I am trying to find its value and rarity. It's #944-Z, titled Donald's One Stop Service. It is in the box. I would like to know the age of this film also.

A [Dave smith]: Donald's One Stop Service is actually a shortened version of the 1935 cartoon Mickey's Service Station. It was released in this version for home use. These 8mm films have little or no value, because most people don't have projectors anymore, the films themselves are often brittle and they have all been released on DVD. I have seen some of the original boxes offered at prices around $10 to $35.

Mickey, Goofy and Donald's Siblings

Q: I know that Mickey has two nephews: Morty and Ferdie, Donald has three nephews: Huey, Dewey and Louie, and Goofy has a son, Max, yet I don't ever recall hearing about Mickey or Donald's siblings or Max's mother. Can you tell me more about this younger generation of Disney characters and how they came to be?

A [Dave Smith]: Disney artists only created characters when they were needed for a story; in the theatrical cartoons no sibling was ever created for Mickey Mouse, and only in some early cartoons did Goofy have a wife. We are told in Donald's Nephews that Donald's sister was named Dumbella, but she was never used in a cartoon. A multitude of relatives for the characters were created for comic books and comic strips. 

Clarabelle Cow & Clarice Chipmunk at Disneyland's Celebrate Parade

Q: In the current Celebrate parade at Disneyland, there is a female chipmunk character and a female cow character that performs as part of the parade. Who are these characters? I've asked many people and nobody seems to know where they originated. Also, why were they chosen to be used in this parade?

A [Dave Smith]: The cow is Clarabelle Cow, who appeared in early Mickey Mouse cartoons. The female chipmunk is Clarice, who played a nightclub singer in the 1952 cartoon Two Chips and a Miss. We always like to bring back some of the lesser-known Disney characters for nostalgia's sake.

The Silent Version of Plane Crazy & Steamboat Willie Premier

Q: We were always under the impression that Steamboat Willie was the third Mickey Mouse cartoon to be produced, but the first one released, on November 18th, 1928. However, a few websites note Plane Crazy as being released on May 15, 1928, six months before Steamboat Willie. Was this a true release date or perhaps just a private viewing for distributors?

A [Dave Smith]: The May 15th date was a preview of the silent version of Plane Crazy in Los Angeles; the film did not have its official release until after sound was added. It opened at the Mark Strand Theatre in New York on March 17, 1929, four months after Steamboat Willie premiered.

The boat has no name in the cartoon an it docks at Podunk Landing. Nowadays, everybody calls the boat, Steamboat Willie. Actually Willie is Mickey's character in the cartoon and he's known as Steamboat Willie just because he works on a steamboat!
